Join us for this month's complimentary webinar.

What you can do now to improve your relationships at work and get more done!

Thursday, November 19
2:00 pm EST

Part of being an effective communicator is understanding yourself and others.

Did you ever wonder why it is easy to talk to some co-workers and nearly impossible
to work with others? Wouldn't it be great if you knew how people wanted to be approached
and if others knew how you like to work? What if people had their needs written
all over them?

Is it just that some people are standoffish while others are friendly? Or is it
that some people like to work alone while others crave collaboration?

During our free webinar, "How Everything DiSC Can Improve Your Workplace,"
you'll gain insight and practical tips that will help you understand:

  • Why is it easier to work with some co-workers and harder with others?
  • What is style and how does style impact our ability to communicate?
  • How can I easily identify others styles?
  • What can I do to have better relationships with people that are different than me?

Everything DiSC® Group Reports & Follow Up Tools - FREE Everything DiSC® Comparison Report

At a Glance
Everything DiSC® Comparison Reports are free disc reports that can be created for any two Everything DiSC® participants, whether they have taken workplace, sales, leadership or management DiSC reports. The Comparison Report is a research-validated report that compares participants to each in other in order to build better relationships and reinforce training. It is also commonly used to help repair relationships between particular team members, as well.

Each participant receives a personalized report designed specifically for them on how to work with the other team member. The Comparison Report allows the participant to not only discover their similarities and differences, but also make notes and highlight certain areas of interest or concern.

Report Features

  • Welcome Back to Everything DiSC – Reintroduces participants to the Everything DiSC Map by reviewing the DiSC styles and their behaviors.
  • DiSC Style Comparison – This portion lays the foundation for comparing the two participants to each other. Participants’ names and DiSC styles are plotted on the map to provide a visual representation of their DiSC styles and distance from one another. Finally, a brief paragraph provides insight on understanding each other’s priorities.
  • Your Similarities and Differences – Participants are given instructions on using the data within the comparison report in order to effectively communicate with the other person. Each person receives personalized narrative on where they and their team member fall on 6 trait continuum's, chosen specifically because of their DiSC styles.
  • Summary & Action Planning – This section prompts for discussion and action toward building a better relationship with the other team member. Your team members can rank the 6 traits by importance to their relationship and develop action items for how to do so.

What People Are Saying About It
“I have used other "profiles" in the past but made the switch to Everything DiSC when I learned about the comparison reports. I noticed that other "profiles" lacked the follow-up reporting I needed. I also like that they are customizable, and you can run as many as you need with just a few clicks."

“I used these profiles and reports with a training program for my sales team. Our sales team took the Everything DiSC Sales profile. Their Manager took Everything DiSC Management, and then I ran Comparison Reports on everyone so they could do one-on-one sessions during their weekly meetings. It was really easy."

Everything DiSC® Gets Even Better!

Everything DiSC® Profiles are Now Using Adaptive Testing (AT)

As you know, the very popular Everything DiSC® profiles (including Workplace, Sales, Management, 363 for Leaders and Work of Leaders) have previously used a 79-item assessment to generate personalized Everything DiSC profile reports.

DiSC profiles Circle
Corexcel is excited to announce that all of the Everything DiSC profiles have been updated to Adaptive Testing (AT) and a new, more advanced, scoring algorithm. Using AT takes the already accurate DiSC system to the next level – providing you with the most precise DiSC style assignment possible.

What is Adaptive Testing (AT)?
AT is commonly used during aptitude tests or trivia games. AT provides the test taker with questions based on their previous questions and answers. This means that participants will not all receive the same survey – your assessment will be as personalized as the Everything DiSC profile itself!

AT testing works great for Everything DiSC because it will determine participants’ results during difficult situations, including:

  1. When participants have answered inconsistently throughout the assessment. Meaning, they rated D behavioral styles as both high and low. More investigating needs to be done to determine the right style.
  2. When participants score high in two DiSC styles. If a participant scores high in both a D and a C, AT will determine which is the strongest – ensuring your profile is as accurate and as personalized as possible.
What are the benefits of using AT?
The Everything DiSC profile reports will be even more specific to you, since they are collecting more information from your assessment answers. It’s no surprise that implementing the AT system will take the precise, consistent, personalized DiSC profiles to the next level.

Precision – Because the assessment questions adjust to each participant, the results will be more accurate.

Consistency – Using AT ensures that results are not only accurate, but consistent across all participants.

Personalized Feedback – Because the assessment will be more adaptive to the participant, the profile will be as well, providing an even deeper level of personalized feedback.

After much beta testing, utilizing AT showed a:
  • 35%  improvement of reliability scale for people who respond inconsistently,
  • 12% increase in accuracy over the 79-item assessment (previously used with Everything DiSC profiles),
  • 32% increase in accuracy over DiSC® Classic.

How will this affect the look of my profiles and facilitation materials?
At this time, the only profile reports that have changed are the free Everything DiSC® Supplement for Facilitators reports. Otherwise, nothing has changed. More data simply means a participant’s dot placement will become even more precise, but it isn’t something the average participant will notice.

In the future, the additional data will be used to update the Everything DiSC profiles to make them even more personalized. The next profiles in queue for updating are the Everything DiSC Workplace and Comparison Reports which should be released this year.

If you would like to be notified of updates to your existing Everything DiSC Facilitator’s Kits, make sure you have registered your kit! Contact us for help registering your facilitator’s kit.

Nothing Compares to the NEW Comparison Report Batch Function!

I couldn’t resist with the title! If you read my latest blog entry about the EPIC batch function feature, you’re going to love my new post about the batch function for Comparison Reports! If you don’t know what Comparison Reports are, don’t worry, I’ll explain it all!

The Everything DiSC Application Library is a new group of products based on the DiSC theory:
  • Everything DiSC Workplace – Workplace is seen as a more personalized and user-friendly upgrade to the original DiSC Classic 2.0 Profile. Workplace provides 350x more personalization and a circular model.
  • Everything DiSC Sales – This report gives you (or your sales team) insight on your selling style and how to adapt to various buying styles. It also includes a FREE Customer Interaction Map.
  • Everything DiSC Management – This gives you an idea of your management style and how it affects both direct reports and superiors.
  • Everything DiSC 363 for Leaders – NEW! DiSC's version of a 360 Report. It provides personalized, approachable 360 degree feedback and 3 personalized strategies to carry forward.

You lost me at Comparison Report…

Comparison Reports are FREE 11-page, research-validated follow-up reports that can be generated for any two participants who have taken any of the above listed profiles. These reports help to illustrate the similarities and differences between two people, across 6 behavioral traits. You can create a comparison report for each person, so that they will have a personalized report based on their perspective working with the other person.

These reports are great to use as a follow-up to training, or to help with conflict resolution between two employees. A few months ago, my colleague and I (both iS’s) ran a Comparison Report for ourselves. What’s interesting is that although we had the same style, we were still far apart from each other on some of the scales. It just goes to show that even if two employees are similar in style, there is still much to learn using the Comparison Reports!

So, what’s so great about the new Comparison Report batch function?
Before the batch function, you would have to manually select each Comparison Report to generate, at a time. Could you imagine if you wanted to run comparison reports for your entire group? Now, you can generate multiple reports at once! And, you can even choose to run reports based on one person’s perspective, or choose to have all participants compared to one another. Excellent feature!

While you will be able to view, save and print these reports in a matter of minutes, they will also be automatically saved in your EPIC account for you.

Already have your Comparison Reports ready to go? Just use the original Batch Generation function to view all of them at the same time.

Overall, just like the original Batch Function, this new addition really makes creating and viewing Comparison Reports a very easy process! The Comparison Reports are such a neat addition to the Everything DiSC Application Library, I hope this increases the likelihood of using them… did I mention they’re free?

DiSC: From Line Graphs to Circle Graphs

I recently attended a training session based on the latest DiSC model. The session was interesting and extremely informative; it never ceases to amaze me how much goes into behavior profiling. Below, please find a review of what I learned about the new circular DiSC model and how it makes a difference to you. For over thirty years, DiSC has been used to help people understand their behavior and how it impacts others. As personal and organizational needs continue to evolve, so do the ways in which the DiSC model can be measured and symbolized. A new approach to measuring DiSC transitions away from the line graph used in the DiSC Classic products to the more contemporary circle graph used in the Everything DiSC Application Library products. The circumplex bears a closer resemblance the earliest representation of the DiSC model as explained by William Marston, the pioneer of DiSC theory. Marston presented DiSC as a circle on a color wheel, which illustrated the continuous nature of behavior. By identifying a participant’s DiSC style with a dot on a circle graph, now participants are able to quickly see where they fall on the DiSC spectrum in comparison to the other styles. It also provides a more visually apparent demonstration of the similarities and differences between the styles. Here are some of the benefits of the circle model:
  • The circular graph is a more intuitive and memorable representation of the DiSC model. It illustrates the blend of behaviors to better reflect the flow of personality styles.
  • Shading on the circle map indicates areas where a person might easily adapt in a situation and areas that may require the participant to stretch.
  • It allows the facilitator to quickly assess the group composition. The Group Reports represent the entire team as individual dots on the circle map. This helps the instructor to identify the implications of the group dynamics.
  • The priority words around the circle map provide an easy and memorable way for participants to apply their DiSC knowledge to everyday life. Instead of learning about abstract personality theories, participants can quickly see the relevance of their DiSC styles to their goals.
  • The scoring in the EDAL products is more precise. Instead of the traditional 4 scales (D, i, S, C), participants’ dots are weighted on 8 scales (D, Di, i, iS, S, SC, C or CD). Respondents also have more freedom to answer in a way that best describes them. Instead of answering a forced-choice survey, participants assess themselves based on 79 questions rated on a 5-point scale.
While the line graph depiction of the DiSC model is still viable and useful, the circular representation of the DiSC graph provides a new way to understand and apply DiSC. The circumplex helps people to visually interpret relationships while realizing patterns in group dynamics.

Exploring Everything DiSC® Workplace

The Everything DiSC Workplace is the latest DiSC-based profile and facilitation system to hit the market. The profile utilizes a 79 question online survey to generate a 20 page report built around improving relationships in the workplace. People who complete the survey will discover their DiSC behavioral style and learn about the characteristics of other behavioral styles. This helps employees build more effective relationships through improved communications. This is an exciting release because the results are not specific to a single department or job function. Every organization can benefit through improved employee relations. Satisfied employees are typically engaged employees and engaged employees are the most productive, by far. In addition to the profile, there’s a comprehensive set of facilitation materials. Organizations that implement the Everything DiSC Workplace profile can use their in-house trainers to deliver professional training sessions built around the concepts discussed in the profile. Of course, organizations also have the option of hiring an outside expert to provide Everything DiSC Workplace training sessions. The facilitation materials include high quality video segments which are menu driven and extremely easy to use. Since the application library is not department specific, trainers can easily add their own twists and examples if they wish to tailor the program to meet organizational objectives. The Everything DiSC Workplace facilitation materials include:
  • Leader’s guide with scripted seminar
  • PowerPoint presentation with embedded video
  • Stand-alone, menu-driven video
  • Participant handouts in Microsoft Word for easy duplication
  • Templates and images
  • A Sample Everything DiSC Management Profile
  • Resource and research information to demonstrate the validity behind the model

One Company Gets DiSC®

This is the final article in a four-part series covering the concepts, applications and history behind DiSC®. It's one thing to take the profile and learn about behavioral styles but it's surely another to understand how to put DiSC to work for your organization. This series of articles will help you understand the theory behind the DiSC model while also providing insight into the sales, management and workplace applications.

One Company Gets DiSC
By 1978, Marston’s book had been on the marketplace for 50 years but there was no easy way to make his words on paper work as a tool to change businesses. Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) was a household name, being tossed around board rooms and conference rooms as “must have” training, but implementing MBTI practically requires a degree. By this time, different industrial psychologists had worked with both concepts and tried to build different kinds of tools using Marston’s theory and Jung’s archetypes without much success. John Geier, PhD was the first to successfully operationalize the DiSC model in the form commercialized by Inscape Publishing. Inscape Publishing offers the original DiSC© instrument, says Barry Davis. “Marston didn’t propose measuring it; he just proposed that the world consisted of these four psychological types and that we could make meaning of them and understand people better if we understand these generalized notions about how people function.” “Our original tool was called just the DiSC Personal Profile System. Then we created the DiSC Personal Profile Software, which was an electronic way to do DiSC. Recently, Inscape Publishing changed the way it packaged its DiSC systems, literally. “We used to sell assessments. Four years ago, Inscape Publishing took everything it had learned about DiSC and organized it into a system called DiSC Facilitation System,” explains Barry Davis, Vice President of Product Development and Marketing at Inscape Publishing. Introduced in early 2008, this product and approach mark yet another step forward in helping Training and Human Resource Managers successfully use DiSC in their companies. “We have really moved from just selling assessments, to selling all of the tools that are useful in applying DiSC to a specific organization or training need. That is really a big change,” says Davis. “We still have PhDs on our staff, psychologists, who develop the assessment and measuring part and the reports but we also have instructional designers, writers, video creatives, editors, web developers and marketing researchers. We have all of the functions under this roof.”

Putting DiSC Management to Work

Everything DiSC Management is a well-tested, proven training system; there is no question about that. But how do end users make it work? The process starts with managers learning what their own style is. Once they get a handle on how they like to interact and work, the next step is figuring out their employees’ styles then adapting their own style to meet the other person’s needs and get the work done. Based on extensive and ongoing research, Everything DiSC Management uses online pre-work to create a personalized report for every manager. The six, one-hour training sessions include video, activities, and guided discussion are easy to use and make it convenient for organizations of any size to help managers recognize and address their employees' diverse personality styles. “By learning a straight-forward process, managers can develop skills to bring out the best in their employees,” said Jeff Sugerman, CEO of Inscape Publishing. “Participants learn the skills they need to increase employee engagement: directing and delegating, motivating, developing others, and how to work with their own managers.” The robust program and the multi-modal approach to training makes it easy for anyone to deliver training that meets each user’s behavioral style. And it makes it easy for managers and supervisors to learn how to use DiSC quickly and effectively. “Managing is one of the hardest things people can do,” says Sue Bowlby, President of Corexcel and a Diamond Distributor for Inscape Publishing. “Everything DiSC Management is the only product focused on managers, assessing their skills then working on their teams and their organizations.” Inscape Publishing describes Everything DiSC Management as, “...classroom training that uses online pre-work, engaging facilitation and contemporary video to create a personalized learning experience” that focuses on five areas: Read Full Article

Digging into DiSC History

The most recent iteration of the behavioral styles concept is DiSC but the theory currently underpinning DiSC dates back to 1928. That was the year that William Molton Marston wrote a book called The Emotions of Normal People. In his book, Dr. Marston proposed a system of psychology that used the acronym of DiSC for the first time. Marston’s idea was to prove brilliant but not many people actually remember that he was the father of the DiSC concept. One reason is that Marston was a Harvard trained psychologist working at Columbia University. He may have proposed the DiSC concept but, because it came out of academia, no one owned it. Another reason Marston’s groundbreaking work in the area of human psychology is often neglected is because there was someone else working in the same field, at the same time Marston was. Carl Jung developed, wrote about and created his theory about archetypes - early models of personality description. His research, which formed the basis for the Myers Briggs Type Indicators (MBTI), was published around the same time that Marston developed and wrote about DiSC. Jung was a well-known Swiss psychiatrist with much higher visibility than Marston but both made significant contributions to the area of study that would become known as psychometric research and the use of psychometrics relative to personality. Jungian archetypes and Marston’s DiSC theory are the foundation on which just about every four quadrant model on the market today are based on, many of which don’t even carry the DiSC name. The Concept Behind DiSC

What manager hasn’t said to himself, at least once in his professional life, that his job would be so much easier if it weren’t for all the people he had to deal with? Odds are there isn’t one person who manages employees who hasn’t uttered that phrase. But getting work done through other people is what most managers are paid to do. What if you could get everything you need to understand, manage and motivate your team and your customers in one small box? What if the key to harnessing human nature was in a package the size of a disposable lighter? Never going to happen? Well, it has. It is called DiSC and it sounds more like the magic decoder ring you used to get out of a box of breakfast cereal or something you would wear on your wrist than a powerful management tool that can change the culture and productivity of a company. Personalities and Performance

The July issue of Training Magazine contains a very interesting article titled Personalities and Performance. The article is part of their Talent Management issue and it mentions the MBTI and DiSC as part of their discussion on personality assessments. The article provides a terrific example of a financial services company using the assessments for growth and development rather than for pre-employment screening. The July issue of Training Magazine - Personalities and Performance article begins on page 36. I also recommend the cover story titled Keys to the Kingdom.

Disney Character DiSC Behavioral Styles

Last week I spent a couple of days at Inscape Publishing’s MindLab conference in Orlando, Florida. In typical Inscape fashion the sessions were excellent and the people I met were delightful. We decided to take advantage of the location and spend a few days exploring Walt Disney World. Wow, have things changed in the 20 years since I was last there! Since we spent a lot of time in the Magic Kingdom, and we were discussing DiSC, I thought I would try a little character reading. Here are four characters I thought fit each DiSC behavioral style.

Musafa from the Lion King – High D

Well, let’s face it he’s a lion. Lions are dominant by nature but his personality style in the movie screams of highly dominant behavior. After all he accepted the challenge of being king, he manages any trouble that arises in the kingdom and helps the rest of the kingdom solve problems.

Ariel from The Little Mermaid - High i

This is one of my daughter’s all time favorites. Ariel tends to view people and situations with optimism, she is very articulate and makes an extremely favorable impression. While she may not seek out social recognition she does like freedom of expression and group activities. This is evident by the number of friends she keeps.

Winnie the Pooh from Winnie the Pooh & Friends - High S

While this loveable bear is not much for details (except when it comes to honey) he sure enjoys people. You might consider Pooh to be a high I but he is probably an S. In his never ending search for honey Pooh demonstrates an extremely steady side to his behavior. He is consistent but patient in his search. There’s no question he’s loyal and has a wonderful calming ability.

Jiminy Cricket from Pinocchio - High C

Jiminy Cricket served as Pinocchio’s conscience so who better to serve as our conscientious example? Jiminy uses subtle or indirect approaches to conflict, is definitely diplomatic and uses systematic approaches to situation. Jiminy Cricket is definitely highly conscientious.
